چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Sleep disorders are common problems in modern societies affecting different aspects of individuals' lives. Many studies have reported that sleep deprivation (SD) leads to impairments in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory formations. Physical exercise has been shown to improve learning and memory. The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of Voluntary exercise on cognitive functions of female rats following sleep deprivation. Materials and Methods: Intact female Wistar rats were used in the present study. The exercise protocol was 4 weeks of voluntary wheel running. The multiple platform method was applied for the induction of 72 h sleep deprivation and the cognitive function was evaluated using Morris water maze (MWM). ANOVA and repeated measures were used to analyze the data and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Throughout the investigation, significant learning and memory impairment was observed in sleep-deprived rats compared to the control group. Voluntary exercise alleviated the SD-induced learning and memory impairment. Conclusion: The results of our study confirmed the negative effects of SD on cognitive functions in female rats and voluntary exercise seems to protect rats from these effects.

Cognitive Impairments of Sleep-Deprived Ovariectomized (OVX) Female Rats by Voluntary Exercise

Introduction: Previous studies demonstrated that forced and voluntary exercise had ameliorative effects on behavioral tasks followed by Sleep Deprivation (SD) in intact female rats. The main goal of this research was evaluating the impact of voluntary exercise on cognitive functions while SD and ovariectomization is induced in female wistar rats. Methods: The rats were anesthesized combining d...

Effect of swimming exercise on spatial learning and memory, and voluntary morphine consumption in maternally separated rats in adulthood

Introduction: Maternal separation (MS) can lead to learning and memory deficits, and also the risk of addiction. On the other hand, physical activities may lead to long-term changes in the mesolimbic dopamine pathway and the hippocampus. This study was designed to examine the effect of swimming exercise on the spatial learning and memory and voluntary morphine consumption in maternally separate...

The Effect of Voluntary Exercise and Prenatal Exposure to Sodium Valproate on Learning, Memory, and Anxiety of Rats’ Offspring

Background: Antiepileptic drugs, such as sodium valproate (SV), are teratogenic as their usage by the pregnant mother has been associated with an increased risk of major congenital abnormalities in the fetus. In this study, the effects of voluntary exercise and prenatal exposure to SV on learning, memory, and anxiety in rats’ offspring are investigated. Methods: In the present study, 70 fe...

Caffeine improved spatial learning and memory deficit in sleep deprived female rat

Previous studies have shown that caffeine has beneficial effects on cognitive impairment in sleep deprived male rats. Therefore in the present study, we examined the effects of chronic caffeine administration on learning and memory impairments induced by sleep deprivation (SD) in the intact and ovarectomized (OVX) female rats. Two sets of animals including intact and OVX were randomly recruited...
